RiNo Art District, A-Line Chalk Art

April 25, 2016

Locomotive RiNo-Completed_

When the art director for Larimer Arts Association, Michael Rieger, shared with me earlier this week, his concept for this weekends Street/Chalk Art, I knew immediately what I wanted to do. The concept was to create a herd of rhinos, using the RiNo Art District’s logo. The symbolism, and many metaphors hit me like a, well like a charging rhino. Many of you are aware of my running series, I call the “Ol’ Bulls”. The male Rhinoceros is also a bull. Next, you have the train connection. That’s where the “Locomotive RiNo” came from. I see the steam engine, I work with closely at the Georgetown Loop Railroad, as another “Ol’ Bull”. This is the point I started combining the two. His body may show the rust of time, but it is still iron. This speaks to the RiNo neighborhood itself. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the Denver area, it too is made up of iron; from it’s factories, to the hundreds of miles of railroad track, that run through it. The Art District itself was dedicated with an “Iron Pour”.

You get the idea… It feels so right, when the art interlaces with actual life. This piece did that. Thanks to my friends who get it, and still put up with me anyway.

I believe all artists & photographers to be historians. Whether it be in recapturing a moment in time or documenting a current event, what we create and leave behind will someday be a record of history.
