I can’t think of too many things more primal than throwing an object at someone just as hard as you can. Or swinging a stick at said object, and returning it to sender. As far back in history as man goes you will hear accounts of exactly that. And when you look at “fight or flight” you either run, or you grab a stick or a rock. So we have been preparing for Baseball since the earliest days of antiquity.
Baseball has refined those basic instincts and we now have pitchers trying to deceive a batter to a point where the ball can not be hit. Or even better, throw in on the batter’s hands and “saw off” or break the handle on the bat. Nothing says domination for a pitcher better than a breaking several bats during a game.
On the other hand, when you can grab a piece of lumber, swing at a ball traveling at 100 mph plus, and make enough contact with the ball to send it out into the darkness on a warm summer’s night; now that’s manly. Or to foul off an 85 mph pitch thrown in the direction of your head, not knowing if it was going to curve or not; that too is manly.
Now imagine, going out and picking your own piece of wood. Now carve, whittle and shape that piece of wood into the best club possible. A club you can use to provide for your family with. Or even protect your family with it. There’s no other feeling like making your own bat, then going out and bashing the ever loving stuff out of a Baseball. I hope you all get to experience it at least once in your lifetime.
