Ahhhhh, Opening Day for the 2015 Major League Baseball season. It feels just like, “We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field.” A new beginning. Every team is undefeated and tied for 1st place. Pretty cool isn’t it? After all, how many times in life do we get to wipe the slate clean and start over with a perfect record?
The reality is in six months and after 162 games most of the teams will be headed home for the winter. A month after that only one team will be left, and they will be crowned WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS.
In reality, even on Opening Day, many experts have already written off many teams as legitimate contenders. This team doesn’t have pitching. This team doesn’t know how to win. This team is injury prone. And the list of excuses is as long as the list of experts.
But I am an optimist. I know that life and baseball are both full of “Perfect Moments”. And I still like to believe that if you string enough “Perfect Moments” together anything is possible. Money can buy talent, skill, and sometimes winning. But money can not buy you “Perfect Moments”. For “Perfect Moments” come from your inner desire. They come from your spirit. They come from a Higher Power. And they feel awesome.
When David fought Goliath he had a “Perfect Moment”. And then David went on and strung a lot of those “Perfect Moments” together. Along the way he made some mistakes, some of them were huge, but I’d say he still had a pretty good career. And that’s how I see Opening Day, the opportunity is there for a good season and an even better career.
I also find it interesting that the cover of this book says, “underdogs, misfits, and the art of battling Giants”. The irony isn’t wasted on me in that the San Francisco Giants are defending World Series Champions. So here’s wishing the best of seasons to all the Davids out there. It’s time to play ball…
